There is no Justice

Here's the follow-up from the story about almost becoming roadkill. We went to the police station, and showed the video to the officer. Despite the fact that the officer agrees that the driver clearly broke the law, he said that there was unfortunately nothing he could do.

It sounds like an officer would have needed to be present to issue a ticket. (Which is weird, because speeding cameras and red-light cameras exist.) He said if we had dialled 9-1-1 immediately and if an officer was close enough to catch the driver, things could have ended differently. But since no officer was around, they would have to launch an investigation which would be a poor use of resources for just a red light ticket, and it could be contested too easily in court. On the other hand, if it were truly a hit-and-run with someone getting injured or worse, that would be a different story too.

It is really disappointing that nothing more could be done. The officer was sympathetic and shared us a story of getting hit by a car while cycling. He recommended us to become active in local politics to push for higher traffic enforcement and more pedestrian safety measures, such as raised crosswalks.
